Scaling & Root Planing in Mississauga

Plaque is a soft, sticky film filled with bacteria that clings to your teeth. If not removed, it can harden into a substance called calculus (also known as tartar). Both plaque and tartar can irritate your gums and lead to inflammation, bleeding, and gum recession—early signs of gum disease.

The earliest stage of gum disease is gingivitis, which causes red, swollen, and bleeding gums. Fortunately, gingivitis is reversible with proper care. If left untreated, however, it can progress to periodontitis—a more serious condition that damages the bone supporting your teeth and may eventually lead to tooth loss.

At Proxima Dental, we use scaling and root planing to treat gum disease and protect your oral health.

What Is Scaling & Root Planing?

Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning procedure that removes harmful plaque and tartar from below the gumline.

  • Scaling targets and removes buildup from the surface of your teeth, especially below the gums.
  • Root planing smooths the root surfaces to discourage future bacterial buildup and helps your gums reattach to the teeth.

When deeper cleaning is needed, we may use local anesthetic to ensure your comfort. Both sonic and hand instruments are used—sonic tools break up larger deposits, and hand tools fine-tune and remove any remaining buildup.

You may feel some mild sensitivity or soreness after treatment, but this usually improves within a few days. Over-the-counter pain relievers are often enough to ease any discomfort.

What to Expect After Treatment

We typically schedule a follow-up visit about four weeks after treatment to assess healing and gum health. Ongoing maintenance cleanings every 3 to 6 months are essential to keeping the gums healthy and preventing future buildup.

The goal of scaling and root planing is to reduce gum inflammation, shrink periodontal pockets, and preserve the bone that supports your teeth.
